Safin's first quarter-final this season
During Wednesday the Russian made an excellent effort coming from one set down to defeat the the Latvian Ernests Gulbis in Los Angeles. It sounds a little bit crazy but actually Safin is set for his first QF during 2009, just that is a sign of how much he has been struggling with his game the last year. Now the former World No. 1 is looking to upset the first seed Tommy Haas.
The German made it a short story against the home favourite Jesse Levine only letting the American win four games. Many experts out there thought that Haas were at the end of his proffessional career and all the injuries made it very tough for him to fight back but the German has proven to be a real soldier. By forcing Federer to go the whole distance in Roland Garros and defeating Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal in Wimbledon Haas har really showed that he is in superb shape. Haas who is currently ranked as No. 22 on the ATP-rankings actually has a slight chance reaching the Tennis Masters Cup in London if he plays as good as he was been playing for the last couple of months.
From Los Angeles we also notice that the big server John Isner fired 11 aces and didn't face any break points to seal the deal 6-2, 7-6(11) against the Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis. Isner has a pretty different way of planning his season; he prefers playing on hard court (especially in the US) so he tends to stay in America also during the clay court season in Europe. Instead of playing on clay in Europe he stays home and plays challengers and practices on the hard court. I don't know what to say about his concept but I think it's a bit sad that he's not willing to increase his game on the slower surfaces.
Well even though I'm more interested of the tournament in Los Angeles I can report that Igor Andreev and Jeremy Chardy is set for a tough quarterfinal clash in Gstaad. That match will be really interesting and I think I'll keep an extra eye on the outcoming of that battle. In Umag, Croatia, the top seeds Nikolay Davydenko and David Ferrer started their campaign in a nice way. The Russian only lost four games to Gimeno-Traver and Ferrer managed to book his place in the second round winning in a third deciding set against Daniel Koellerer. Well, Crazy Dani is for sure the funniest guy to watch on the tour. He always tends to get mad on something, if it's not the chair umpire it colud be someone in the crowd and why not one of the line referees.
I'llsoon make a list of funy youtube videos for you to watch. There is not a lack of players losing their temperament on court so to say! :D
